"The Shortage Of Everything Is Coming And It's Scary"
"A shortage used to be one thing at a time. One shelf, one season, one story you heard about for a week and then forgot. Not anymore. This is one month, sixty-seven different places, and the same sentence at every counter: we do not have it, and we do not know when. Put them side by side and the pattern comes up out of the floor. Not one of these people is describing a panic. Every single one of them is describing an ordinary day where one specific thing was not there. That is what a shortage actually is. Not crowds and stripped aisles - a gap, in one place, that somebody local has to stand there and explain to a stranger: a stocker, a pharmacist, a rancher, a manager who knows exactly which truck did not come. And every one of those gaps was decided years ago, somewhere else, by somebody who is not in the story. A herd sold off in a drought, and a cow takes two years to make a cow. A generic nobody wants to manufacture anymore because the margin is gone. A definition that lets the government say there is no shortage, while not one pharmacy within driving distance of you has it on the shelf. None of it was announced. It reaches you as a sign taped to a shelf, and an employee apologizing for a company that never told them either. That is why Americans have stopped waiting for anyone to make it official, and started preparing on their own."
