"Your Bank Account Just Went To Zero"
"Thousands of bank customers woke up over Labor Day weekend to discover something terrifying: their bank accounts appeared to have a zero balance. BMO completed the sale of 138 branches to First Citizens, and customers in multiple states reported problems accessing their money, debit cards, online banking and everyday transactions during the transition. This happened at the beginning of the month, when rent, bills, automatic payments and other financial obligations were coming due. This is not a bank failure, but it raises serious questions about banking, branch sales, mergers, digital banking and what happens when control of your account suddenly changes. We look at BMO, First Citizens, the 138-branch transaction, customer access problems, bank runs, financial instability, business news and why having multiple financial institutions and a backup plan may be more important than ever. This is a warning about how quickly access to your money can change when banking becomes entirely digital."
