"At least 100 Palestinians were laid to rest in a mass funeral in Gaza on Sunday. At least 62 of them were children. The bodies were reportedly found in the rubble of a collapsed residential building. It is unclear when it was bombed but the excavation of the dead is painstakingly slow since Israel does not allow recovery equipment into Gaza. Just over a month ago, a similar mass funeral was held for 112 people, also buried in a residential building from an Israeli strike in November of 2023. Gaza officials estimate that at least 8,000 more people are similarly buried in their graves of rubble.
And yet, somehow life goes on. Last week, children in Gaza were shown a screening of Disney's The Lion King. The photo went viral because it captures an almost impossible juxtaposition. In the foreground, children watch a story about childhood innocence shattered by death and loss. In the background, a landscape of destroyed buildings bears witness to that very reality."
