"We're Heading Towards A Complete Disaster"
"In this new interview, Professor Jeffrey Sachs warns that the United States is facing a dangerous combination of military stalemate, economic pressure, rising debt, and a financial market he describes as a bubble. He argues that Washington vastly overestimates its ability to dictate global trade while underestimating the economic damage caused by sanctions, tariffs, and continued confrontation with Iran, China, Russia, and other major powers.

Sachs examines the so-called economic D-Day announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 24, arguing that sanctions against Iran are unlikely to fundamentally change Tehran's behavior because Iran can continue trading with China, Russia, and other countries outside the dollar-based financial system. He points to the Strait of Hormuz, which carried about 20.9 million barrels of oil per day in the first half of 2025, equivalent to roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption.

Finally, Sachs connects the geopolitical crisis to domestic economic pressure and the wider Middle East conflict, arguing that military spending, energy disruptions, trade tensions, and debt are converging into a broader strategic failure. He also discusses conditions in the West Bank, where the United Nations reported more than 1,430 settler-related incidents in 2026 by August 10, with about 3,800 Palestinians displaced by settler violence, demolitions, and evictions. His broader argument is that the era of unquestioned U.S. dominance is ending, although several of his interpretations remain contested and should be evaluated against the underlying evidence."
