"Americans Film Their Grocery Receipts
And Nobody Can Afford A Full Cart"
"The weekly shop used to be the boring part of the budget. It is now the part that decides whether the rest of the month works. Sixteen American shoppers filmed their own carts and their own totals. A woman works out that she is $85.26 from being overdrawn and asks how anyone buys two weeks of groceries with that. A mother feeds herself and her daughter for a week on $35. Another sets a $40 weekly budget and films whether it holds. One family adds up three stores in a single day - $169.73, $215.69, $153.54 - and lands on a total over $538. A man asks people to guess what his cart cost and the guesses come in low. A woman films the moment her food stamps are wiped from the card. Two others film the walk into the food pantry, one of them saying she had nothing left to lose. None of them are experts. None of them are reading a script. They are standing at a till or sitting in a car park with a receipt in their hand, and the total does not match the money that is there.

If you have started putting things back on the shelf, or doing sums in the aisle, you are not disorganized and you are not overspending. That is genuinely where food prices have landed for a great many households, and it has happened fast enough that budgets built a year ago no longer hold. A few things are worth looking at. Food pantries are not means-tested in most places and do not ask what you earn - the people in this video who used one all say the same thing about how ordinary it was. Check whether your state has expanded SNAP eligibility, because the thresholds moved and a lot of working households now qualify who did not before. Many supermarkets mark down meat and bread on a predictable schedule; ask a member of staff what time. And if a relative has offered to pick up a shop, let them."
