"Cheap Gas Is Gone And Families Are Going Broke"
"Filling the tank used to be the part of the week nobody thought about. You pulled in, you paid, you got on with your day. That is not where we are now. The number on the pump has become the thing that decides what else gets bought this week - and the people in this video are the ones doing that arithmetic out loud, on camera, in real time. One man films the sign reading $8.21 a gallon and says you might as well get a horse. A woman in Pennsylvania cannot believe regular is $4.75. Another woman commutes to work, fills up every three days, and says plainly that she physically cannot afford it anymore - she was paying forty to forty-five dollars a tank a few months ago and it is sixty-five now. A driver in California explains that you need money stacked away somewhere just to keep driving. Somebody puts five dollars in and drives off embarrassed. None of them are analysts. None of them are reading a script. They are standing at a pump with a phone in one hand and a nozzle in the other, and the number in front of them is bigger than the number they planned for.
What follows is eighteen of those moments, one after another, from people all over the country. Watch what they do with their hands. There is nothing careless about any of them. They are working, they are driving to that work, and the road itself has gotten more expensive to travel. That is not a personal failing. That is the ground shifting under a great many households at once, and they are feeling it because they are the ones paying for it. If you are doing this same math tonight, a few things are actually in your hands. Look hard at the trips you are making and see which ones can be combined or skipped. See whether there is a small amount of money coming in from somewhere else, even something unglamorous. Talk to the people near you about sharing rides, because your neighbors are running these numbers too. And where you can build a small cushion for the long weeks, build it. Not one of those brings the price of a gallon down. But each one is yours to do, and doing beats waiting. Put in the comments what a tank runs where you live. We read all of them."
