Douglas Macgregor, "Start Preparing Now"
"In this new interview, retired Colonel Douglas Macgregor warns that forcing the Strait of Hormuz could expose American capital ships to precision missiles, drones, torpedoes, and other weapons designed to disable rather than simply sink them. He argues that the United States is closer to a World War I style attritional conflict than the decisive naval wars of World War II, while questioning whether the Navy can sustain its current posture. The interview also examines the human and economic costs of the Iran-Iraq War, with Macgregor arguing that Iran suffered between 500,000 and 700,000 or more casualties and therefore views the current conflict as existential. He says the Persian Gulf cannot simply be replaced, noting its importance for oil, helium, sulfur, nitrogen, and fertilizer inputs, while the Strait of Hormuz normally carries roughly one-fifth of global seaborne oil and liquefied natural gas.
Macgregor predicts that Egypt could join the emerging Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia alignment within six months or slightly longer, while Russia, Iran, and China form another strategic bloc. He argues that American power projection is becoming increasingly difficult in an environment where large formations can be detected by persistent ISR and attacked by massed precision weapons, concluding that the United States should shift toward hemispheric defense rather than attempting to maintain global military dominance."
