"Joe Kent is an American former Green Beret, CIA paramilitary officer, Republican political figure and former director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center. Kent served approximately 20 years in the US Army, including with the 75th Ranger Regiment and Army Special Forces. He completed 11 combat deployments, principally in Iraq but also in Yemen and North Africa, eventually retiring as a chief warrant officer. He subsequently worked in the CIA’s paramilitary branch. Kent resigned from the counterterrorism position on 17 March 2026 over the US war against Iran. He said the available intelligence did not demonstrate that Iran presented an imminent threat to the United States and argued that entering another major Middle Eastern war contradicted the non-interventionist foreign policy Trump had previously promised."
