"Eleven Americans filmed the moment their food assistance disappeared.A man's dying mother is told to pay back years of food aid - with interest - or lose her disability income. A woman files her renewal on time and gets cut off anyway. A family of eight loses everything on the fifth of the month. A man who works a full-time job and drives DoorDash on top of it gets $16 for the entire month. Then there is the theft, which almost nobody talks about. Someone drains her card at three in the morning. Another wakes up to $900 skimmed overnight, gone, with no way to get it back. A single mother of five reaches the register with sixty cents left, her benefits stolen that same morning, a winter storm on the way. And the ordinary humiliations in between: the card declined at the register on a Sunday with a full cart. Sixty-hour weeks and still qualifying. Working full time and then getting the shutdown email anyway. $550 a month, gone, with no notice and no one to call. Nobody in this video is debating policy. Nobody is explaining a program to you. These are people filming themselves in a parking lot or a car or a checkout line, in the first few minutes after finding out that the money for food is not there. If you have ever been on SNAP, or you are on it now, you already know how fast the ground moves. If you have not, this is what it looks like from inside."
