"The Behavioral Sink: A Fable For Our Times"

"The Behavioral Sink: A Fable For Our Times"
by Hardscrabble Farmer

"Not long after the last of the last American soldiers returned home at the close of WWII, a little-known ethologist named John B. Calhoun set up a quarter acre pen somewhere on the outskirts of Rockville, Maryland and populated it with several dozen Norwegian rats. His experiment was meant to see just how large the population density would become if they were provided with adequate food, water, shelter and protection from predators so that all of their needs were met. Fellow researchers dubbed his experiment rat utopia and before long he had discovered the answer to his question.

When his research caught the eye of bureaucrats at the National Institute for Mental Health, they approached him with an offer of unlimited funding for another project along the same lines under stricter conditions than the bucolic environs of a pasture just north of Washington, D.C. By 1954 he had devised a complex interior setup for his rats to inhabit that divided the environment into four cells, each configured to provide a continuous supply of food, water and bedding with plenty of space for nests and open areas for social interaction. Into each of these he placed an equal number of both male and female rats and simply watched as they began to at first explore and then to colonize and dominate their surroundings.

There is very little material available about his research today, though at the time he was a media darling. During this period Americans had become concerned with the concept of overpopulation, due in large part to popular media and its constant focus on a “population bomb” that threatened to exhaust the Earth’s resources if something wasn’t done about it. As his research was just beginning to demonstrate the consequences of overpopulation the New York Times book review was pushing dystopian works such as "Stand on Zanzibar" and Paul Ehrlich’s "The Population Bomb."

Years before Mao began his enforced One Child Policy, American cosmopolitans were aggressively selling the concept of ZPG, or zero population growth in the pages of Time. Back in the government lab that housed the ever-growing population of rats, certain unpleasant realities were beginning to manifest themselves in the behavior of the colony. Calhoun was able to observe a recurring pattern, broken into four distinct phases that repeated itself each time he re-stocked his utopian environment; Exploration, Exploitation, Stagnation, and Death.

In the first phase the rodent experiment the numbers were such that the social order was rapidly established, hierarchies arose within days and the dominant males created harems of available females and guarded them against the lower ranking competitors. Feeding areas were designed so that no individual could eat alone but rather had to share communal trays. The choice nests were established at ground level while the lowest ranking members of the colony had to climb towers to their nesting spot.

With plenty of space and endless supplies with a small population resulted in a living space that was, as far as brown rats go, copacetic. During the exploitation phase two discernible differences arose- a rapidly growing population and an increasingly hostile environment. The dominant males controlled access to the quadrants where their harems lived while the lower ranking members turned to an endless cycle of violence towards each other as well as the younger generation of rapidly maturing rivals.

As the population grew to the point where no rat was able to find privacy, the third phase began in earnest. At this stage Calhoun observes that the rats have entered what he calls a behavioral sink, a situation where aberrant and destructive behavior becomes the norm and normal behavior is no longer possible. For example, the females abandoned their young, attacked them, or oddly enough, became sterile. Certain numbers of both male and female became- according to Calhoun- somnambulists.

They slept the majority of their lives emerging only to gorge themselves at the feeders while the rest of the colony slept, slowly becoming enormous and dying far earlier than the other rats. The subordinate males clustered together between the quadrants and controlled the access to food for the younger rats, violently attacking them and each other. They also turned into pansexuals, neither interested in mating but rather engaging in homosexuality and self-gratification in their nests for extended periods of time, often damaging and disfiguring their genitalia and pulling out their fur.

The remainder became probers, a constant source of irritation to the dominant males who used every available means to keep them away to the point of exhaustion and eventual submission to groups of predatory male rats who would kill them and raid their harems, killing the offspring and even the females. At the peak of the population which reached over 2,200 the entire colony entered the terminal phase and once reproduction ceased it was simply a matter of time until the natural cycle of rodent mortality ended the experiment yet again. Over and over for years until NIMH pulled the plug and ended its funding of Calhoun’s Mortality-Inhibiting Environment for Mice. Utopia, at least for rodents, remained elusive.

In the years following the release of his publication entitled "Population Density and Social Pathology" plenty of people jumped on the bandwagon and tried to turn the results into a commentary on modern urban living and overpopulation. Tom Wolfe’s final chapter of The "Pump House Gang" was originally a short essay entitled “Oh Rotten Gotham! Sliding Down Into the Behavioral Sink” followed by a novel, later turned into the children’s movie "The Secret of NIMH," by Robert O’Brien, a very dark and decidedly un-child friendly dystopian cartoon featuring scientists carrying out a rodent genocide. Calhoun continued on with his work, but never returned to the rats again, calling the outcome of his experiment ” a Malthusian dilemma born of a Utopian vision.”

One could reasonably conclude that all of those experiments done on the taxpayer’s dime so many years ago at the National Institute of Health would have made some kind of impression on the people who are paid to look at such outcomes. It could be safely assumed that they understand that by confining any living creatures in large numbers and in tight spaces, regardless of the necessities provided, would lead to certain consequences. Perhaps they have looked at the data and they do understand what occurs when a Utopian society is allowed to flourish and that is the endgame. But then we’re not brown rats."

"In The Time Of Your Life..."

“In the time of your life, live - so that in that good time there shall be no ugliness or death for yourself or for any life your life touches. Seek goodness everywhere, and when it is found, bring it out of its hiding place and let it be free and unashamed.

Place in matter and in flesh the least of the values, for these are the things that hold death and must pass away. Discover in all things that which shines and is beyond corruption. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into secrecy and sorrow by the shame and terror of the world. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart.

Be the inferior of no man, or of any men be superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man's guilt is not yours, nor is any man's innocence a thing apart. Despise evil and ungodliness, but not men of ungodliness or evil. These, understand. Have no shame in being kindly and gentle but if the time comes in the time of your life to kill, kill and have no regret.

In the time of your life, live - so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it.”

The Forbidden Law the Awakened Dare Not Break"
"What if awakening wasn’t just insight - but responsibility? What if becoming conscious carried a hidden law that, once broken, slowly dissolves meaning, stability, and inner coherence? In this profound psychological and philosophical exploration inspired by Carl Jung, we uncover the forbidden law that governs awakening - a law that many seekers unknowingly violate. Jung warned that consciousness without integration is not enlightenment, but danger. And those who awaken without honoring this inner law often suffer not because life is cruel, but because the psyche demands balance. This is not a motivational video. It is a confrontation. A psychological initiation into what awakening truly demands. If you are drawn to Carl Jung, shadow work, individuation, and the deeper ethics of consciousness, this video will challenge how you understand growth, spirituality, and responsibility."

"Time, Life, And The Roller Coaster"

"Life is truly a ride. We're all strapped in and no one can stop it. When the doctor slaps your behind, he's ripping your ticket and away you go. As you make each passage from youth to adulthood to maturity, sometimes you put your arms up and scream, sometimes you just hang on to that bar in front of you. But the ride is the thing. I think the most you can hope for at the end of life is that your hair's messed, you're out of breath, and you didn't throw up."
- Jerry Seinfeld
Remember when you were 10 years old, and summer felt like it lasted forever? Got a little older, not so bad, still plenty of time to do everything you wanted. Someone told me back then that time speeds up the older you get. Being young, and knowing everything as the young do, I of course ridiculed this idea. But guess what - it’s true. Now I view life, and time, as a roller coaster with just one enormous riser. Time is slower to pass at the beginning as you climb towards the top.  At 30 or so you’re at the very top, then you start the fall towards the bottom. Faster and faster you go, as time goes by ever quicker. Weeks and months flash by, and you wonder where it all went, and as you descend ever faster you suddenly realize that somewhere on the tracks below there’s a solid brick wall or some other disaster awaiting your arrival. The only things you don’t know is where on the tracks ahead of you it is, or how soon you'll arrive. So, while you still can, you'd better appreciate even more the things you can enjoy, and the people whom you love and that love you, because the ride isn’t going to last forever... - CP

"How It Really Is"

Bill Bonner, "Shots Fired"

"Shots Fired"
by Bill Bonner

Rancho Santana, Nicaragua - "Poor Donald Trump. His approval ratings keep falling. Yahoo!: "Trump’s approval rating on his favorite issue just dropped to a record low." And The Hill: "Trump approval among independent voters hits new low: Poll."

And now that his ICE agents shot dead Renee Good, he may have lost another supporter. USA Today: "President Donald Trump said he hopes the father of Renee Nicole Good, the woman who was shot and killed by an immigration officer in Minneapolis, is still a “Trump fan” after his daughter’s death."

Meanwhile...comes word from Baltimore. “It’s freezing cold. And there must be three inches of ice on the car.” We wonder how the weather affects Mr. Trump. It’s probably not just the Big Freeze that breeds discontent, but the fact that POTUS insists that we should thank him for the balmy weather!

Denying the evidence of our eyes and ears has not seemed to work in Minneapolis. Americans had come to expect certain standards of decency...or at least plausible hypocrisy...from their leaders. For example, they believed they could lawfully and peacefully carry firearms without being accused of terrorism (the 2nd Amendment). They thought they could make their opinions heard without being roughed up on the streets (the 1st Amendment). They didn’t think they needed to carry their birth certificates - their ‘papers’ - when they went to ‘Home Deport’ (the 4th amendment). And if they were picked up by the police, they thought they’d get a chance to confront their accuser and dispute the charges against them (the 5th and 14th amendments). It must have come as a shock to millions of voters that the rights they thought had been solemnly granted by the Constitution...and faithfully protected for more than 200 years...could be swept away without warning, debate, or vote.

But Mr. Trump says this is a ‘war’ and the Constitution doesn’t apply. Team Trump quickly branded the Minnesota Martyrs as ‘domestic terrorists.’ But everyone could see they were not what we think of as ‘terrorists.’

The Mirror: "Trump has ‘lost control’...as Minnesota ICE deaths spark MAGA revolt and White House chaos."

The poor old coot. He went all the way to Switzerland to deliver a rambling discourse that must have been almost incomprehensible to those whose native language was not New York-ese. Old. Tired. His ratings must have fallen minute by minute, like those of Joe Biden in his last debate with Trump.

And there’s an old rule in theater. When you bring a cannon onto the stage, sooner or later you’ve gotta fire it. Mr. Trump arrived with his heavy artillery - he was going to invade Greenland! - but then he turned around and took his cannon home with him. It made him look weak.. The poor old fellow. He went to all the trouble of taking out Maduro in Venezuela...and warning Vice President ‘Delcy’ in front of the whole world. The New York Post: "Trump threatens Venezuela’s new leader Delcy Rodriguez with a fate worse than Maduro if she doesn’t work with US." And now, bold as brass, ‘Delcy’ gives him the finger. The Hill: "Venezuela acting president says she’s had ‘enough’ of orders from Washington."

Poor Mr. Trump. His Trump Coin has lost 98% of its value. And even his wife’s hagiographic documentary, Melania, is said to be disappointing. Newsweek: Market researcher Boxoffice has projected it will gross between $1 and $2 million in opening weekend ticket sales. Both figures are well below the $40 million Amazon paid for the title.

Poor Mr. Trump. So eager to prove he is not the hopeless, low-IQ bumbler from Queens that he appears to be...so eager for the adulation of the sophisticated Manhattan crowd...so ready to throw his weight around to prove something. Even if they never admire him, at least they will learn to fear him. Right?

And then, there is the economy. But the anti-dollar, anti-bubble element, gold, is selling for $5,533 this morning. Poor Mr. Trump. More to come..."

"Bomb Cyclone Second Hit: Deadly Blizzard
Targets East Coast as Arctic Freeze Spreads South"
"A dangerous second winter storm is rapidly taking shape - and this one may be even more severe than the first. Forecasters are tracking a fast-strengthening Miller Type-A coastal system that is expected to move directly up the East Coast, placing the I-95 corridor from Washington, DC to Boston in the highest risk zone. The storm is forming over the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to undergo explosive intensification (bombogenesis) as it rides north along the Atlantic. This time, the storm has no escape route. A locked-in Greenland Block combined with an Omega blocking pattern is forcing the system to hug the coastline, dramatically increasing the threat of heavy snow, blizzard conditions, whiteouts, destructive winds, and extended power outages. With deep Arctic air already in place, snowfall rates could spike rapidly due to very high snow-to-liquid ratios."

Did you know UPS is letting go of 30,000 workers after losing their Amazon deal? Or that Rocket Mortgage and Redfin are under fire for illegal kickbacks? It’s a wild time, and these are just the tip of the iceberg. Real estate contracts are being canceled at record rates, sellers are outnumbering buyers, and housing prices are stagnant in a market that’s shifting rapidly. On top of that, AI layoffs, skyrocketing energy bills, and a shrinking restaurant industry are just a few signs of how tough things have become. People are working into their 80s just to survive, while others are trying to downsize to tiny homes that still cost a fortune".

Joel Bowman, "The Truth About Politics"

"The Truth About Politics"
by Joel Bowman

“The final cause of all great revolutions, which lies deeper than
their effective cause, is not the accretion of intolerable conditions,
but the loss of cohesion that bolstered the society’s artificial peace of mind.”
~ Robert Musil, "The Man Without Qualities", Volume I (1930)

Buenos Aires, Argentina - "Like rights, disasters and Hollywood faces, truth, too, generally falls into one of two broad categories: natural... and man-made. One is objective... the other subjective. One subject to reason... the other reasonably suspect. One illuminates... while the other obfuscates.Today, we focus on the latter...

Consider the following headlines, fresh off the popular presses, covering the very same event:
From CNN: "Protesters clash with federal agents outside Minneapolis hotel."
From Fox News: "Anti-ICE agitators arrested outside Minnesota hotel as police declare unlawful assembly: ‘No longer peaceful’."
And, just for fun, one from The Guardian: "‘What they’re doing is the worst of humanity’: Sundance festival stars back anti-ICE protest."

What’s the real deal? What’s “fake news”? Whose account are we to believe, if any at all? Is the truth “out there”? Is it discoverable? Will we ever really know, one way or another?

Truth and Beauty: One thing seems certain: in the age of Artificial Intelligence and human stoopidity, fact is becoming increasingly hard to discern from fiction. And to some extent, this has probably always been true. A lot depends on where you look. For some folks, truth is to be found in revelation: “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” as the Nazarene preached unto his followers. Others find it in art, such as Keats revealed in his "Ode to a Grecian Urn":

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

While still others follow it through the winding halls of philosophy, from Aristotle’s truth through logic to Locke’s truth through experience, Kant’s truth through interaction of mind and world to Hegel’s truth through dialectical process, and so on and so forth, all down the line...

But of all the myriad ways to get at “what’s real,” only an imbecile looks for “truth in politics”... and only a crackpot finds it. What matters in the shabby world of government bureaus and meddling politicians is not so much truth, per se, but the direction of those who truly believe they’ve discovered it. This group, a familiar mob on history’s stage, includes the deranged and the deluded, the crazed and the credulous and, naturally, the demagogues and ideologues leading all the bleating lambs to slaughter. And this is one reason, as we’ve noted many times before in these pages, that when it comes to being into politics, we’re mostly into being out of them.

It’s not that the subject itself is without its charm, its gauche entertainment value... or that the rogue’s gallery is without its cast of colorful villains... or that there is nothing to learn, even if only by way of cautionary tale... Politics is all that... and less!

A “strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles,” as Ambrose Bierce had it. “The last refuge of the unrefined,” agreed Oscar Wilde. As a lens through which to comprehend truth... to understand objective reality... this cracked glass offers a warped world view, to say the least.

Consider the overt political framing of a few non-trivial events from the recent past... Did Covid-19 originate from a stray bat/pangolin at a Chinese wet market... or from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the same institute that received sizable gain-of-function research funding from the NIH (through Ecohealth Alliance) under Dr. Fauci’s stewardship?

Did Vladimir Putin blow up his own, multi-billion dollar pipeline, Nord Stream II, as an act of self-sabotage... or did the US government (and its NATO allies) “take out” Russia’s critical infrastructure, like Victoria Nuland and Joe Biden promised to do, as when the former president said, in February 2022, “There will be no Nord Stream 2 — we will bring an end to it,” adding “I promise you we will be able to do it.”

Are we beyond the “climactic tipping point,” fast approaching the “age of boiling,” as prophesied by Al Gore, St. Greta, Tsar Kerry and the army of Just Stop Oil catastrophists... or have climate-related deaths continued to precipitously decline, as they have done now for centuries, thanks in no small part to fossil fuel-based industrialization and the vast technological innovation it has brought forth?
[NB: It is perhaps worth noting that the decline in climate-related deaths, shown above, occurred even as the global population over the last century has grown by almost 4.4 times, or roughly 340%, from ~1.8 billion in 1920 people to ~8 billion today.]

In each of the above cases... and too many more to mention... we, the public, were fed answers in the form of “scientific consensus,” “expert opinion” and “revealed truth.” To so much as question the prevailing narrative was tantamount to proclaiming oneself a Russian asset, to hating the environment or wishing grandma into an early grave.

For reasons that ought to be obvious, few people broach these “long-forgotten,” hot-button subjects nowadays, least of all those who once thundered their certainty through legacy media megaphones, and who have since wandered, mindlessly, toward the next cause du jour, paint-by-numbers protest placard firmly in hand.

As to the ongoing protests in Minneapolis, now spreading to capital cities around the United States, the question is not whether conflicting reports are crafted to bolster political narratives on both sides, but what the deeper trends churning beneath the surface, of which these violent outbreaks are likely symptomatic, portend for the future.

One wonders, are we standing on the precipice of a great revolution? Are we, as Robert Musil wrote in his epic work almost a century ago, witnessing “the loss of cohesion that bolstered society’s artificial peace of mind”? And if so… what comes next? To be continued..."

About 600 light-years distant, the clouds aren't actually melting, but they are slowly dissipating under the influence of ionizing ultraviolet radiation from hot, luminous star gamma Cas.

Gamma Cas is physically located only 3 to 4 light-years from the nebulae, just off the upper right edge of the frame. In fact, slightly closer to gamma Cas, IC 63 is dominated by red H-alpha light emitted as the ionized hydrogen atoms recombine with electrons. Farther from the star, IC 59 shows proportionally less H-alpha emission but more of the characteristic blue tint of dust reflected star light. The field of view spans about 1 degree or 10 light-years at the estimated distance of gamma Cas and friends.”

The Poet: David Whyte, "The Opening of Eyes"

"The Opening of Eyes"

"That day I saw beneath dark clouds
The passing light over the water,
And I heard the voice of the world speak out.
I knew then as I have before,
Life is no passing memory of what has been,
Nor the remaining pages of a great book
Waiting to be read.
It is the opening of eyes long closed.
It is the vision of far off things,
Seen for the silence they hold.
It is the heart after years of secret conversing
Speaking out loud in the clear air.
It is Moses in the desert fallen to his knees
Before the lit bush.
It is the man throwing away his shoes
As if to enter heaven and finding himself astonished,
Opened at last,
Fallen in love
With Solid Ground."

"15 Great Depression Foods
We Will All Be Eating Again Soon"
By Epic Economist

"The reality of millions drastically changed after the 1929 stock market crash. All of a sudden, affluent Americans lost everything, middle-class families became poor, and poor households fell into misery. For over a decade, our citizens struggled to make ends meet and many of them didn’t have enough to eat.

Parents would skip meals to feed their children as they were forced to survive on next to nothing. Bread lines extended for miles, and food insecurity became an epidemic. Fast forward to today, and we have what experts call the biggest stock market bubble in history just ready to burst. Even though we have learned a lot since the 1930s, our leaders continued to make the same mistakes. And now more than ever, it’s looking like history is about to repeat itself. The question is: when everything collapses will you be prepared?

According to a very detailed article published on Ask A Prepper by Katherine Paterson, for us to be truly ready for the challenges that are coming for us, we will all need to get creative with our meals. To understand how Americans survived the dark times of the Great Depression, we need to understand how to make our resources last. Back then, essentials including meat, eggs, and milk were in extremely short supply, and people often had to make a little go a long way, as explained by Paterson.

We are already seeing the same shortages happening today. And it’s just a matter of time before another financial disaster throws our economy into disarray. With a little bit of preparation, you won’t have to panic when staples start disappearing from store shelves if you know how to adapt. You don’t need many different ingredients, and you definitely don’t need expensive foods to cook delicious dishes.

Culinary is something very important for our culture. It was through such hearty meals that people had the drive to keep fighting to get out of such challenging situations. Food connects us and gives us a sense of purpose and identity. That’s why it is so crucial to make preparations for when the essentials we rely upon aren’t available anymore. The warning signs of an impending financial and economic meltdown are everywhere. And once it happens, vulnerable supply chains can be broken in a snap of fingers.

Our leaders may have made the same wrongful decisions that put us where our grandparents and great-grandparents were almost a century ago. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make more conscious choices this time around. So get ready now while we’re still experiencing the calm before the storm, because when it starts to spiral out of control, it may be too late. That’s why in today’s video, we listed some very popular meals that previous generations used to eat during that era because those recipes may soon become handy for all of us as well."

"Insects Are Vanishing From the Earth - Why Some Doctors Are Terrified" (Excerpt)

"Insects Are Vanishing From the Earth -
Why Some Doctors Are Terrified"
by Dr. Joseph Varon

Excerpt: "Insects are vanishing across the globe, and their disappearance is a clear signal of environmental harm. Yet medicine and public health officials continue to treat the environment as separate from human health. When the smallest, most sensitive forms of life can no longer survive, people should pay attention.

Insects are disappearing across vast regions globally. This is not a modest decline or a simple geographic shift, but a rapid vanishing of beetles, butterflies, moths, flies, mosquitoes, bees, and entire functional groups. This phenomenon is not speculative or anecdotal; it is among the most consistently documented biological trends of the past 50 years and remains insufficiently addressed. For context, the total biomass of lost insects is comparable to the combined weight of all commercial aircraft worldwide, representing a profound ecological and economic loss.

For decades, insects were treated as background noise - annoyances at best, pests at worst. Their abundance was assumed, their resilience taken for granted. We designed agricultural systems, urban environments, chemical interventions, and technological solutions on the unspoken assumption that insects would always be there. They were too numerous to fail. This assumption has proven incorrect.

The Data Are Not Subtle: One of the most widely cited early warnings came from a long-term German entomological study that tracked flying insect biomass across protected areas over nearly three decades. The result shocked even the investigators: a decline of more than 75% in total flying insect biomass between 1989 and 2016.¹ These were not industrial zones or pesticide-saturated fields. They were nature preserves. However, many regions like Africa and large parts of Asia still lack comprehensive, long-term insect monitoring, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of global insect declines.

Subsequent studies confirmed that this was not an anomaly. A global review published in Biological Conservation concluded that approximately 40% of insect species are threatened with extinction, with declines accelerating in recent decades.² Longitudinal data from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, North America, and East Asia tell the same story with local variation but consistent direction.³-⁶

The loss is not limited to rare or specialized species. Common insects - the ones that once filled the air - are disappearing fastest. Entomologists now openly discuss “functional extinction,” a state in which species technically still exist but no longer play their ecological roles in meaningful numbers.⁷ The significance of this issue is often underestimated.

Insects Are Not Optional: Insects occupy a central role in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. They pollinate plants, recycle nutrients, regulate microbial populations, control pest species, and serve as the primary food source for numerous birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. Rather than being peripheral, insects form the structural foundation of these systems. The loss of these foundational species could result in the disappearance of familiar foods such as coffee, chocolate, apples, and almonds, directly impacting daily nutrition.

Approximately three-quarters of global crop species rely at least partially on animal pollination, predominantly by insects. The economic value of insect pollination alone is estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars annually. But focusing on economics understates the issue. Without insects, food systems collapse not just quantitatively, but qualitatively. Nutrient diversity declines. Resilience vanishes. Dependency on industrial inputs increases. A study published in PLoS One found that the decline in insect pollinators could lead to a reduction in the concentrations of key vitamins such as vitamin A and folate worldwide, amounting to a 40% decrease in nutrient density in certain crops. Ecological systems tend to fail abruptly rather than gradually once critical thresholds are exceeded.

The Windshield Phenomenon Was a Warning We Dismissed: Long before peer-reviewed journals quantified insect loss, ordinary people noticed something odd: windshields stayed clean. Anyone who drove regularly in the 1970s or 1980s remembers scraping insects off headlights and bumpers after short trips. That experience is now rare enough that younger generations often find it hard to believe. The so-called “windshield phenomenon” was not merely a matter of nostalgia; it represented an informal yet consistent observational indicator of declining insect abundance.¹⁰ When millions independently notice the same biological absence, the observation warrants scientific attention. Nevertheless, it was often dismissed as anecdotal, unscientific, or irrelevant.

In medical education, trainees are instructed not to disregard patient-reported symptoms solely due to challenges in quantification. In ecological science, however, similar observational evidence was often disregarded.

Mosquitoes, Misunderstood, and Essential: Few insects are more universally despised than mosquitoes. Their role as vectors of infectious disease makes them easy targets for eradication campaigns, and their decline is often celebrated. But ecosystems do not allow selective deletions without consequences. Mosquito larvae are a primary food source for fish and amphibians. Adult mosquitoes feed birds, bats, reptiles, and other insects. Their disappearance reverberates through food webs in ways that are poorly modeled and rarely discussed.¹¹

The belief that undesirable species can be selectively removed while maintaining ecosystem stability reflects a mechanistic misconception, similar to the outdated medical notion that symptom suppression equates to disease resolution. Natural systems do not benefit from simplification; rather, they are adversely affected by it."

"The Fate Of 342 Million Americans Hangs In The Balance As The Clock Ticks Closer To Doomsday"

"The Fate Of 342 Million Americans Hangs In
The Balance As The Clock Ticks Closer To Doomsday"
by Michael Snyder

"The total population of the United States has risen to 342 million, and most of them believe that they will live to a ripe old age. But as the world teeters on the brink of the unthinkable, scientists have just moved the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight than ever before. We are being warned to reverse course while we still can, but most of the population is not interested in such warnings. Instead, most of the population just continues to act as if the party is never going to end.

When I was born, about 200 million people were living in the United States. Adding approximately 140 million more people has fundamentally transformed our nation, and many areas of the country that were once sparsely populated are now quite crowded. But now population growth has slowed down dramatically…"The United States population grew last year at one of the slowest rates in its history, according to new numbers released on Tuesday by the Census Bureau. The immigration numbers plunged by more than 50 percent from the previous year, under the aggressive anti-immigration policies of President Trump. And the birthrate continued its nearly two-decade long decline.

The nation’s population increased by about 1.8 million over the year, and stood at almost 342 million on July 1, the estimates say. That is a growth rate of about 0.5 percent, the lowest since 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic caused deaths to soar and borders to close, shutting the door to international migration. That year saw the slowest growth since the nation’s founding."

In recent years, immigration has been responsible for most of our population growth. Of course with President Trump in the White House, the number of immigrants coming to the U.S. is way down, and that trend is expected to continue…"As Mr. Trump continues his term, immigration is expected to drop even further. If current trends continue, it will fall to about 321,000 for the year ending on June 30, according to a Census Bureau news release."

The other primary reason why population growth is slowing down is because U.S. families are simply having fewer children…"A sharp drop in the birthrate also contributed to the slowdown in population growth. The birthrate has been falling since the Great Recession in 2008, and new births outpaced deaths by only about 518,000 in the latest period. That is higher than during the peak of the Covid pandemic, when deaths were soaring, but it is still extremely low by historical standards."

This is a trend that stretches back for a long time. U.S. women are not getting pregnant as frequently as they once did, and the number of abortions in this country has been going up every single year since Roe v. Wade was overturned. In fact, close to 100,000 abortions are now being performed in the United States each month…"The number of abortions reported nationwide has grown steadily since the Supreme Court returned jurisdiction of the procedure to the states, driven by a surge in mail-order pills. The pro-choice Society of Family Planning estimates that the U.S. averaged nearly 99,000 abortions monthly during the first half of 2025, up roughly 4% from 2024. The society found that 73% of abortions were performed at clinics, compared with 27% through telehealth prescriptions. That was up from less than 10% of pregnancy terminations through telehealth in the first six months of 2023."

At the same time that we are performing abortions on an industrial scale, we find ourselves closer to an apocalyptic global conflict than ever before.

On Tuesday, we learned that the Doomsday Clock is now the closest that it has ever been to midnight…"Humanity continues to move closer to catastrophe, scientists said Tuesday, Jan. 27. The human race is at its closest point yet to destroying itself, according to the reset of the ominous but symbolic “Doomsday Clock.” The metaphorical clock now stands at 85 seconds to midnight after advancing four seconds since last year’s reset. The clock is now the closest to midnight since its introduction in 1947. It is updated each year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which organizes the assessment of how close we are to a self-inflicted end of humanity."

It was never even this close to midnight during the worst moments of the Cold War. When this year’s announcement was made, the scientists that are responsible for the Doomsday Clock specifically mentioned the United States, Russia and China… According to the Bulletin, “our current trajectory is unsustainable. National leaders – particularly those in the United States, Russia, and China – must take the lead in finding a path away from the brink. Citizens must insist they do so.”

How many years have I been warning about war with Russia and war with China? In recent months we have deeply angered both of them by seizing international oil tankers, grabbing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, threatening to impose exceedingly high tariffs on both of them, and gathering an unprecedented amount of firepower in the Middle East to potentially attack their ally Iran. If we go to war with Iran, it will do a massive amount of damage to our relationships with both Russia and China. This will especially be true if unconventional weapons end up being used in that war.

Tensions in the region are sky high at this moment, and both sides are ready to pull the trigger. A single wrong move could send missiles flying all over the place, and that is why the fact that a mystery explosion has just been reported in Iran is so alarming…"A military installation in Iran has been hit by a reported explosion amid claims Donald Trump has been considering a strike on the Islamic Republic. The cause of the blast remains unknown.

Open Source Intel, which identifies itself as a media monitoring service, reported an explosion on Tuesday at the Parchin “military complex”, citing journalist and Iranian political analyst Behnam Gholipour. The unverified report of an explosion arrives during a period of escalating tensions in the Middle East, where a US aircraft carrier group has deployed to spearhead any American military action in response to Iran’s violent suppression of nationwide protests."

Once the missiles start flying, there will be no turning back. If it was up to me, I would have set the Doomsday Clock even closer to midnight. For decades, we have been warned about the horror of nuclear weapons. I believe that we are living at a time when they will actually be used. At the moment, the 342 million people that are living in this nation are working hard and trying to enjoy life. But the truth is that the unthinkable is right around the corner, and the clock is ticking."

"This is Unsustainable -
The Economy Is on the Brink"
"In this video, I break down why everything feels like it’s getting more expensive, more unstable, and harder to manage all at once. From natural gas prices exploding and heating bills shocking families, to real estate cracks, layoffs, automation, and the growing gap between executives and everyday workers, the pressure is building everywhere you look. These aren’t isolated stories - they’re signals of a system under strain. We also cover what’s happening with jobs, travel, media, AI, and how quietly these changes are reshaping daily life. While some people are thriving, many are being squeezed with fewer options and higher costs, and that imbalance is becoming impossible to ignore. This isn’t about politics - it’s about reality on the ground and the economic signals most people aren’t talking about. Watch closely, because this environment isn’t sustainable, and what comes next will affect everyone."

"A Second Major Winter Storm Is About To Slam Again"

Whiteout Reports, 1/28/26
"A Second Major Winter Storm Is About To Slam Again"

"A powerful second winter storm is forming - and it could be worse than the first. Meteorologists are closely monitoring a rapidly intensifying Miller Type-A coastal storm that is expected to track directly along the East Coast, targeting the I-95 corridor from Washington DC to Boston. This system is developing in the Gulf of Mexico and is projected to undergo rapid intensification (bombogenesis) as it moves up the Atlantic coastline.

Unlike the previous storm, this one has nowhere to go. A strong Greenland Block and Omega Block pattern are forcing the storm to stay pinned to the coast, increasing the risk of heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, whiteouts, damaging winds, and prolonged power outages. With Arctic air already in place, snowfall could pile up quickly due to extremely high snow-to-liquid ratios.

This storm is arriving while hundreds of thousands are still without power, making this a potentially dangerous “second hit” winter event. Areas of concern include: Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and surrounding Mid-Atlantic & Northeast regions. Stay informed, stay prepared, and take this storm seriously."

Bill Bonner, "Discombobulation"

"Discombobulation"
by Bill Bonner

Rancho Santana, Nicaragua - "We keep our spirits up by realizing that no matter how awful things get, they could be worse. And today...we take a peek at what ‘worse’ we’re talking about. Here’s the latest from CBS: "Trump says U.S. used secret ‘discombobulator’ on Venezuelan equipment during Maduro raid." But the discombobulation appears to be temporary. The Independent: "Venezuela’s acting leader says she has ‘had enough’ of US orders."

Recall that the US empire rested on three legs. A strong economy, with the world’s reserve currency. A respect for the rule of law (albeit often hypocritical). And superior firepower. Our vassal states were attracted by all three. They looked to US dollar trade to bring growth and prosperity. They depended on the US to stick to the rules of a law-based consensual democracy. And they welcomed the protection offered by the US military. But now, the US uses its dollars, its trade policies, and its military might not to protect its friends from its foes, but to discombobulate them all. The Washington Post: "Pentagon’s new defense strategy... The 2026 National Defense Strategy signals that European allies can no longer depend on the U.S. to deter Russia."

What can friends and allies do but look elsewhere? Indian Express: ‘Mother of all deals’ India-EU FTA to boost India’s manufacturing and services sectors, strengthen investors’ confidence: PM Modi. ‘The trade agreement is expected to be among the most comprehensive that India would sign, which could benefit India’s labor-intensive sectors, ranging from marine products, textiles, footwear and sports goods.’

The Wall Street Journal adds: "Stung by Trump, America’s top trading partners cozy up to China." They may be leaving the dollar, too. Larry Johnson: "Losing Dollar Supremacy...The Savage Consequences of Weaponizing the Dollar as a Political Cudgel." "The 54-year reign of the US dollar as the world’s preeminent reserve currency is coming to an inglorious end.

The dollar’s reserve status is an exorbitant privilege. It lowers our borrowing costs, expands our fiscal room, and lets us export risk and import goods on uniquely favorable terms. But privileges are not entitlements. They are conditional. And they come with responsibilities. A reserve currency must satisfy three conditions. Liquidity, stability, and neutrality. The United States has always provided the first two. The third was assumed. It is no longer assumed."

The Cradle adds: ‘The US dollar’s centrality to cross-border transactions and its role as the world’s reserve currency are no longer guaranteed – and this shift is no longer theoretical.’

Jeffrey Sachs and Sybil Fares: ‘In an interview at Davos, Secretary Bessent explained in detail how US Treasury sanctions were deliberately designed to drive Iran’s currency to collapse, cripple its banking system, and drive Iran’s population into the streets. This is the “maximum pressure” campaign to deny Iran access to international finance, trade, and payment systems.’

Where does this lead? Inflation? Debt? Defaults? War? Violence? What is the point? More to come..."
