Chains Collapse Coast To Coast"
"Seven grocery stores shut their doors in one weekend. An eighty-eight-year-old family market turned off its lights for the last time. A Kroger closed and left the seniors who walked to it with no way to reach food at all. This is not one bad quarter for one struggling chain. It is a nationwide contraction happening store by store, mostly unannounced, filmed by the people it happens to. In this video you'll watch Americans stand in the aisles and do the math out loud. A thirty-dollar roast at a discount grocery store. A hundred and thirty-nine dollars for a cart that looks like nothing. Twenty-one items that cost forty-six percent more than the same twenty-one items a year ago. A single mother with eleven dollars and three kids to feed. A worker walking her last shift. A neighborhood watching its only source of fresh produce get boarded up.
The pattern underneath is measurable. Between 2019 and 2024 food-at-home prices climbed about 25 percent while paychecks moved 21. In 2024 retailers announced more than 7,100 store closures, a 69 percent jump on the year before. USDA put food insecurity in single-mother households at 35.2 percent. United Way's ALICE data counted 29 percent of U.S. households as employed and still unable to cover essentials. What closes with a grocery store is not just a building. It is the last walkable place to buy fresh food in a neighborhood that already had nothing else."
