"Homo Credulus"

"Homo Credulus"
by Joel Bowman

"Man: He’ll go along with just about anything. Given the right circumstances…a little programming…and enough time for it all to marinate in his soft, mammalian brain… there is almost nothing Homo Credulus will not learn to embrace. Don’t believe us?

Take a look at the historical record; you’ll soon wonder how we ever got this far. Sure, you’ll discover gizmos and flying contraptions, art and agriculture, music and mathematics. You’ll witness spectacular scientific breakthroughs, the number “0” and a man’s footprint on the moon. You’ll also find automobiles with so many cup holders, you won’t know where to holster your oversized 7/11 Big Gulp.

But you’ll also scratch your head. Perhaps you’ll even weep. And if you think hard enough, you’ll put a few things to serious question…“Central banks?” “Modern democracy?” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show?” How has mankind survived such atrocities? Self inflicted, no less! And why, moreover, does he rush so earnestly to repeat and replay his worst mistakes? (Ellen has been on air since 2003!) Don’t be too hard on yourself, Dear Reader. After all, repetition is nothing new…

You’ll recall that it was the Greeks who first gave the world democracy – from the Greek, dēmokratía, literally “Rule by ‘People’”. (And yes, it was those very same Greeks who put their own beloved Socrates to death, by a majority vote of 361-140.) Today, democracy is a cherished tenet of “the West.” It is woven into the civic religion, sewn into the social fabric. Men march off eagerly to fight for it, to proselytize it, and to die in forgotten ditches defending it.

At least, that’s what they believe they’re doing. As usual, the poor saps have been duped. Herewith, a little historical context…The phrase “Making the world safe for democracy” was actually a marketing slogan, coined back in the 1910s, as a way to sell “The Great War” to America. Weary from their own disastrous Civil War just a few decades earlier, in which hundreds of thousands of (mostly) young men gave up the ghost, Americans were mostly inward looking at the time. That is to say, they wanted little to do with what they largely saw as a “European affair.”

Polls might have indicated no appetite for battle, but the nation’s politicians were nonetheless starved for military misadventure. They sensed big profits abroad, both in manufacturing armaments and making onerous bank loans to foreign lands. Sure, “the nation” would have to fill tank and trench with warm young bodies, but very few soldiers would carry senatorial surnames along with their rifles. And so, after a public relations campaign of truly epic proportions, America marched off to war, wrapped in the delusion they had freshly been sold.

Eddie Bernays, the man who coined the phrase and, thus, peddled the war to America, made a fortune for his efforts. He was even invited by Woodrow Wilson to attend the Paris Peace Conference, in 1919, as a show of gratitude for his services. There, Bernays learned the full impact of his “democracy” slogan. An obviously bright fellow, the surreal experience caused him to think. If people will line up to kill one another under the influence of a mere marketing campaign they could surely be convinced to do, say and buy just about anything!

Bernays was right. In fact, he wrote a series of books, detailing his insights. They included "Crystallizing Public Opinion" (1923), "A Public Relations Counsel" (1927) and a neat little number titled "Propaganda" (1928), in which Bernays laid out the blueprint for mass social and psychological manipulation. The collected works went on to become a huge success, and the favorite of none other than Joseph Goebbles, Reich Minister for Propaganda in Nazi Germany between 1933-45.

Bernays himself, writing in his 1965 autobiography, recalls a dinner at home in 1933 where… "Karl von Wiegand, foreign correspondent of the Hearst newspapers, an old hand at interpreting Europe and just returned from Germany, was telling us about Goebbels and his propaganda plans to consolidate Nazi power. Goebbels had shown Wiegand his propaganda library, the best Wiegand had ever seen. Goebbels, said Wiegand, was using my book "Crystallizing Public Opinion" as a basis for his destructive campaign against the Jews of Germany. This shocked me. […] Obviously the attack on the Jews of Germany was no emotional outburst of the Nazis, but a deliberate, planned campaign."

It is indeed chilling to think of such a heinous undertaking as being engineered, blueprinted, premeditated and carried out according to some kind of script. And yet, there it is, in Bernays’ own words, the “Father of Propaganda.” Having acquired somewhat of a tainted reputation-by-association, propaganda, itself, underwent a “strategic rebranding” after WWII. But make no mistake, the very same métier thrives to this day, under the more socially palatable designation, “Public Relations.” Still, a ruse by any other name…

“Could we be so stupid again?” wonders the gentle reader. “Might the mob still be swayed by what Charles Mackay termed ‘extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds?’” Why, of course! That’s the nature of the mob! Whether in love, finance, politics or any other matter, man is wont to be convinced, assured, persuaded, often against his own best interests. Few are the absurdities in which he will not take refuge, invest his hard-earned capital or squander his morality. All he needs is a good story, something to arrest his imagination and cauterize his capacity for reason. A distraction from his lonely, quotidian existence. That, and a few crumbs to pass his lips.

The Roman poet, Juvenal, recognized as much when he mocked the panem et circenses (bread and circuses) stratagem almost two millennia ago. In his "Satire X", he referred to the Annona (a kind of grain dole) and the famous circus games, held in the Colosseum and elsewhere, as designed to keep the unthinking population fed and happy.

Look around you today, Dear Reader. What do you see, two millennia later, in the Year of Their Lord, 2024 AD? We’ve got reality television and stadium sports matches, food stamp programs and an Everest of transfer payments, we’ve had mask mandates at schools and the whole pretense of safety and security, there’s $35 trillion in national debt and government spending out the wazoo., plus a collapsing workforce, an opioid epidemic (out-killing COVID-19 in < 65s) and Whoopi Goldberg in the sin bin...

And behind it all, the greatest bread and circuses show ever: modern representative democracy. Now, as then, the show goes on!"

John Wilder, "Motorcycles, Gold, And Infinite Money"

"Motorcycles, Gold, And Infinite Money"
by John Wilder

When I was in 8th grade. I decided I wanted a motorcycle, a dirt bike that I could take back up on the Forest Service and BLM roads. This was before the Internet, and there were hundreds of miles of roads and trails... right behind my house. The best part was that no driver’s license was required on federal lands.

I announced I was saving up to buy a motorcycle at dinner. I had a few hundred dollars in my savings account that had been on receive-only mode for birthday and Christmas money since I was five. Ma Wilder became enraged, “You’ll do no such thing! Your uncle died in a motorcycle crash! Why buy one when you can use his?”

I kid. With a goal in mind, I started saving everywhere I could, and within a month I’d managed to get a quarter of the way there to my goal. To be honest, at least part of that money likely came from the illegal drug trade. I mean, why else would I find $50 in cash secured via a rubber-band to some suspicious oregano-looking substance in a Kodak™ film canister at the school?

I did the right thing, and turned it all in to the school secretary and after 30 days they gave me the cash. Shockingly, no one had showed up to claim that it was there, perhaps since possession with intent to distribute at a school was probably a pretty big deal back then. No mention was made of the final disposition of the organic products, though the school staff seemed pretty mellow and called me Dr. Feelgood for the rest of the school year.

Back then, money meant cash in a jar under the bed or something rubber-banded to a film cannister containing substances of unknown origin. It was tangible, untraceable, and not some glitchy app with a trendy name promising me riches if I swipe right on a meme coin. Fartcoin, that makes sense as investment, right? It has to be more stable than Zitcoin. If I were asked to describe the economy at the end of the third quarter of 2025 in on sentence, I‘d say: “Gold is glittering like it is auditioning for a role in Tarantino’s briefcase, and stocks seem to be high on their own supply.

Let’s take those in order. Gold just hit $3,806. Per ounce. Let’s look closer at what could be causing this: Part of it is because the dollar is cratering under a mountain of printed funny money. The other part is because central banks are whispering, “Screw the digital dollar, give me something I can bite.” The dollar is wheezing like Jerry Nadler (who is the number one search engine hit when I searched for “short fat democrat”) after a flight of stairs. The dollar is down 5% year-to-date against a basket of currencies. But gold? It is up 42% in the last year, because in 2025, we still haven’t figured out how to print gold.

Think about it: why hoard ones and zeros when you can stack bars? Central banks from Beijing to Basel are buying gold like it’s Black Friday at Fort Knox. Yes, that same United States Bullion Depository which I’ve been told is still totally full and how dare you ask because why don’t you trust us? And let us be honest, gold is pretty, far prettier than staring at a ledger full of debt that your grandkids will pay off with their kidney sales to overseas oligarchs. Remember: nothing says “economic stability” like elements that outlast empires. So, gold is up.

In other news this week, here’s the real clown show: Nvidia® just announced a $100 billion investment in OpenAI©, who will promptly funnel cash to Oracle™ for data centers, so they can buy...more Nvidia™ chips to power the data centers. I have no idea how this isn’t the definition of a Ponzi scheme, because it’s a feedback loop so incestuous it makes European royalty blush. I mean, they’d blush if those genes hadn’t disappeared along with their chins and ability to clot blood. Nvidia©’s market cap? $4.47 trillion, equivalent to 13% of the $37 trillion national debt. All so you can have ChatGPT®. Tell me this is not an asset bubble?

The S&P® 500 is up 22% year-to-date which is a “totally not a bubble ready to blow-off” number. I was pretty happy that my individual retirement account had beaten that. Genius investing? I wish. No. It’s just inflation, with everything from eggs to ETFs doing moonshots as money chases it around. Nvidia™ is the poster child. I almost bought some in April when it was around $100. Today, it was north of $170. I’m sure that this is totally not a bubble built on recycled cash. But it’s also not growth: this is a daisy chain of delusion, where pets.com© high-fives Alta-Vista™ and Cisco® into oblivion. Sign me up.

Speaking of which, I having saved up a big chunk of money I was stuck at home on spring break. On Wilder Mountain, fourteen miles from the nearest town, that meant that after the books were read and the models were made, I had to do something. On the north side of the house, however, there was a huge block of ice left over from compacted snow during the winter – in places it was two feet thick. I was bored. I poked around in the garage and found a five-foot-long iron rod, pointed at one end, about an inch and a half in diameter.

If you have never been in 8th grade and so bored you decided to take a harpoon and smash ice for an afternoon, well, you’ve never lived. It was, actually, fun, especially kicking it out of the shadow of the house into the bright spring sunshine where it glittered and glistened as it melted away.

However, it had a weird impact on Ma Wilder. She thought I was trying to help, not realizing I was just bored and being destructive in a socially acceptable way. She talked with Pa, and, proud of my industriousness, they offered to stake the rest of my motorcycle purchase. So, don’t give up. If the Trump economic policy is thrashing around aimlessly breaking stuff hoping that something good will happen, then, heck, maybe we’ll all get motorcycles? I mean, there are a lot of uncles, right?"

"Two Guys Named Stephen"
by Bill Bonner

Normandy, France - "As to what will actually happen, we demure...we hem...we haw...we say ‘on this hand’...then, ‘on the other hand’...and then, when we run out of hands, we admit that we have no idea. But that is not true. We have ideas about what will come to pass. It’s just that...well...we don’t fully trust them. No matter, today, we lay out what we think is the most likely financial future for the USA.

In proper nouns, it is two guys named Stephen. Where do they get people like Stephen Miran? And the other Stephen...Stephen Miller? These are guys for whom political power is a way to prove that they aren’t the dislikable twerps that everyone thinks they are. They get power by bellying up to the Big Man. Then, they use it as he would - bullying rivals with tariffs, sanctions, and worse. Miran proposed, for example, that Trump impose “a two percent monthly increase in tariffs on China, in perpetuity, until the demands are met.”

And in a remarkable speech at Charlie Kirk’s funeral, the other Stephen proposed that there were two kinds of Americans. There are the ones with halos - among whom he counts himself and his boss, Donald Trump. And there are those with devil tails...the ‘they’...whoever they are...responsible for all the evil in the world today.

"But don’t worry. The good guys will triumph! We are the storm. And our enemies cannot comprehend our strength, our determination, our resolve, our passion. Our lineage and our legacy hails back to Athens, to Rome, to Philadelphia, to Monticello. Our ancestors built the cities. They produced the art and architecture. They built the industry."

Who “we” are is as much a mystery as who “they” are. Both groups share the same ancestors. And, on that subject, Miller needs to get in sync with his arch, stormtrooper ally, Benjamin Netanyahu. Miller says ‘our lineage and legacy’ goes all the way back to Athens. But Netanyahu declares Israel to be a ‘super-Sparta.’

Sparta, was of course, the city state that leveled Athens and took its citizens into slavery. And in Sparta itself, there were more slaves, called helots, than free men; the Spartans murdered them from time to time to keep them from getting out of control. As near as we can figure, one Stephen is in charge of whipping up the masses with absurd rhetoric...the other in charge of hyping up the economy with absurd policies.

But our beat is money. So, we’ll stick with the knucklehead Miran. Realtor.com reports: "Fed Gov. Stephen Miran Calls for Dramatically Lower Interest Rate After Voting for Jumbo Cut." "Stephen Miran has spoken publicly for the first time since President Donald Trump appointed him to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, calling for dramatic cuts to the central bank’s interest rate. In comments to the Economic Club of New York on Monday, Miran diverged starkly from Fed Chair Jerome Powell and argued that the policy rate should be in the mid-2% range, nearly two percentage points lower than the current range of 4% to 4.25%."

Miran is a relatively young man. The Financial Times named him as the ‘architect’ of Trump’s tariffs. From what we can tell, he believes tariffs won’t cause inflation because he thinks the currency markets will adjust. In other words, Americans won’t really pay a higher price for their new Volvo, for example, because the dollar will go up against the kroner, giving Americans greater purchasing power, and keeping the real price more or less where it was." But profit margins in the auto industry average about 7%. A 15% base tariff rate - paid by the manufacturer in a decline of the kroner - would leave them with a big loss. Why would they continue?

What Miran is describing comes from the ‘free lunch’ school of economics, where the US can receive billions in tariff tax income without taking anything away from the consumers and producers who pay it. Miran got onto the Fed board by telling Donald Trump that he could lower interest rates, boost employment, spend more money, and put on his tariffs with no loss to the dollar’s value. The ‘free lunch’ would come about by the magic of ‘growth’...which would goose up GDP and thereby send a flood of new tax revenue into the basement of the Treasury.

But there is no evidence of such growth anywhere in the economic record. Just the opposite. The Fed never, ever had rates as low as they were in the 2008-2023 period. And yet, growth rates declined from the 3 and 4 percents of the 1990s to the 1 and 2 percents of the 2008-2025 period.

In May of next year, Jerome Powell will step aside. Miran is expected to take his place. He will do what he says he will do - lower interest rates. Fearing more inflation, private investors will dump their US bonds, leaving the Fed to buy them and finance federal deficits almost by itself. The result will be inflation. Gold will rise. Stocks may rise too, but probably not as much. In a year or two, the ratio - Dow/Gold - will be near our ‘5’ trigger. And that will put out DGTS (Dow/Gold Trading Strategy) to the test. Who will want to buy stocks in a declining economy, with gold soaring...and the two Stephens in charge?"

"The Ironic, The Tragic Thing..."

"One can fight evil but against stupidity one is helpless. I have accepted the fact, hard as it may be, that human beings are inclined to behave in ways that would make animals blush. The ironic, the tragic thing is that we often behave in ignoble fashion from what we consider the highest motives. The animal makes no excuse for killing his prey; the human animal, on the other hand, can invoke God's blessing when massacring his fellow men. He forgets that God is not on his side but at his side."

"3I/ATLAS Signal Finally Decoded by AI -
 And It's Terrifying!"
"Astronomers have just confirmed that the mysterious interstellar object 3I/ATLAS isn’t silent after all - it’s been emitting a strange repeating signal. Now, for the first time, advanced AI has decoded the transmission, and the results are nothing short of terrifying. In this video, we’ll uncover: How telescopes first detected the eerie signal from 3I/ATLAS. The breakthrough moment when AI finally cracked the code. What the decoded message actually revealed - and why it has scientists alarmed. The chilling parallels to previous interstellar visitors like ʻOumuamua. What this means for humanity, planetary defense, and the possibility of first contact. This isn’t just another rock from deep space - 3I/ATLAS may be trying to communicate. The decoded message could change the way we see the universe… and our place within it. Watch until the very end - the truth behind the signal will leave you speechless."

OMG...
They've now discovered 9 larger objects coming in on the same exact vector as I3/Atlas, which may be a scout ship for a larger fleet arriving in strength. Another, the enormous C/2025 R2 (SWAN) is 100 times the size of I3/ATLAS, and is generating 10,000 gigawatts of energy. (Earth's total global nuclear power capacity totaled 396 gigawatts, with 439 reactors operating across over 30 countries as of July 2024.) As the astronomer/physicist Avi Loeb states, if I3/ATLAS is the "scout" ship SWAN is the "fortress" to which I3/Atlas is sending reports. My guess is that it was the sudden massive energy signatures of using the atomic bombs in the 1940's that caught their attention. Their purpose unknown, all conjecture at this point, but data verified. What does all this mean for Humanity, for you and me? If Humanity has a future... We shall see... - C

“When the pain of leaving behind what we know outweighs the pain of embracing it, or when the power we face is overwhelming and neither flight nor fight will save us, there may be salvation in sitting still. And if salvation is impossible, then at least before perishing we may gain a clearer vision of where we are. By sitting still I do not mean the paralysis of dread, like that of a rabbit frozen beneath the dive of a hawk. I mean something like reverence, a respectful waiting, a deep attentiveness to forces much greater than our own.”

"What created this unusual planetary nebula? NGC 7027 is one of the smallest, brightest, and most unusually shaped planetary nebulas known. Given its expansion rate, NGC 7027 first started expanding, as visible from Earth, about 600 years ago. For much of its history, the planetary nebula has been expelling shells, as seen in blue in the featured image. In modern times, though, for reasons unknown, it began ejecting gas and dust (seen in red) in specific directions that created a new pattern that seems to have four corners. These shells and patterns have been mapped in impressive detail by recent images from the Wide Field Camera 3 onboard the Hubble Space Telescope.
What lies at the nebula's center is unknown, with one hypothesis holding it to be a close binary star system where one star sheds gas onto an erratic disk orbiting the other star. NGC 7027, about 3,000 light years away, was first discovered in 1878 and can be seen with a standard backyard telescope toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus).”

"Most Americans Do Not Understand That Palestine Is Not a Mythical Creation"

"Most Americans Do Not Understand That
Palestine Is Not a Mythical Creation"
by Larry C. Johnson

"I am writing this to inform some friends who believe, wrongly, that there is no such thing as Palestinians and that the people being genocided by the Zionists are nothing more than interlopers.
Prior to 1947, the territory now occupied by Israel and the Gaza Strip was commonly called Palestine. This designation was used during various historical periods, including the Ottoman rule and the British Mandate period (1920–1948). The British Mandate for Palestine was established after World War I and lasted until 1948, during which the region was officially administered under that name. The term Palestine historically referred to the geographic area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea and was used in various forms dating back to ancient times, including Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods.

The earliest recorded historical reference to Palestine dates back to around 1150 BCE in ancient Egyptian inscriptions during the reign of Ramesses III. The name Peleset (transliterated as P-r-s-t) was used to describe a group of people, likely the Philistines, who lived along the southern coast of the region.

The first clear use of the term Palestine to refer to the broader region was by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BCE. In his work The Histories, he described a district of Syria, called Palaistínē, which included the area between Phoenicia and Egypt, incorporating the Judean mountains and the Jordan Rift Valley. Thus, while the name’s roots trace back to ancient Egyptian references to coastal peoples, the geographical concept of Palestine as a region appears clearly in Greek literature from the 5th century BCE.

Overview of the 1922 Census of Palestine: The 1922 Census of Palestine, conducted by the British Mandatory authorities on October 23, 1922, was the first comprehensive population survey under the Mandate. It provides a snapshot of the demographic composition of Palestine at the onset of British administration, following the collapse of Ottoman rule and the establishment of the Mandate by the League of Nations. The census recorded the population by religion, as this was the primary demographic identifier used at the time, reflecting the socio-political context of the region. It covered all inhabitants of the territory defined as Palestine, including urban and rural areas, but excluded some nomadic populations due to enumeration challenges.

Population Composition by Religion: According to the 1922 Census, the total population of Palestine was 757,182. The breakdown by religious affiliation, as reported in the official census document (Census of Palestine 1922, published by the British Mandatory Government), is as follows:
As you can see, the majority were Arab Muslims, predominantly Sunni, living across urban centers (e.g., Jerusalem, Jaffa, Hebron) and rural villages. This group formed the largest demographic, reflecting the historical Ottoman-era population. The Jewish population included both longstanding Sephardic and Mizrahi communities (e.g., in Jerusalem and Safed) and newer Zionist immigrants arriving during the late Ottoman period and early British Mandate, particularly under the Second and Third Aliyahs (1904–1914, 1919–1923). About 40% lived in Jerusalem and Jaffa districts. And the Christians consisted of mainly Arab Christians (Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant denominations), with significant communities in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. A small number of European Christians (e.g., clergy, missionaries) were also included.

The next census was in 1931 and, like in 1922, was conducted by the British Mandatory authorities on November 18, 1931. It aimed to provide an updated demographic profile of Palestine amid significant political and social changes, including increased Jewish immigration during the Third and Fourth Aliyahs (1919–1923, 1924–1929) and growing Arab-Jewish tensions over land and national aspirations. Like the 1922 Census, it primarily categorized the population by religion, reflecting the era’s socio-political focus on communal identities. The census covered all settled inhabitants of Mandatory Palestine but faced challenges in fully enumerating nomadic populations, particularly Bedouins.

According to the official Census of Palestine 1931, published by the British Mandatory Government, the total population of Palestine was 1,035,821. The breakdown by religious affiliation is as follows:
Events in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union were the catalyst behind the doubling of the Jewish population in Palestine - not Judea and Samaria. The Muslims and Christians who inhabited Palestine prior to World War II were not refugees from some other country… Palestine was their historical home. Keep these points in mind in the coming weeks as Donald Trump’s administration tries to make the case that the Palestinians have no legal claim to the territory they and their ancestors have lived in for centuries. Stop the genocide."

"Carl Jung Reveals the Biggest Mistake You Make in Life"
"Why do the same patterns keep repeating in your life - failed relationships, missed opportunities, inner conflicts that never seem to end? In this video, we uncover Carl Jung’s most powerful insight: the biggest mistake people make is ignoring the unconscious. Jung revealed that until you face the hidden parts of yourself - your shadow, your projections, your unexamined desires - you will continue to call fate what is really self-sabotage. Discover how the unconscious shapes your choices, why projections distort your relationships, and why meaning is essential for psychological survival. Most importantly, learn why Jung believed that true freedom comes only through individuation - the journey of becoming your whole, authentic self. Stay until the end, because the final revelation about love as the ultimate key to wholeness may completely transform how you see yourself, others, and the path to true fulfillment."

"Spreading My Ashes in the Twisting River"

"Spreading My Ashes in the Twisting River"
by Edward Curtin

“You may be right, I may be crazy,
but it just might be a lunatic you’re looking for...”
- Billy Joel, "You May Be Right"

"They say a stitch in time saves nine. They say it is always good to be prepared. They say Preparation-H is good for hemorrhoids. They say that Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” They say the Girl Scout motto is “Be Prepared.” They say so many things like that that make me feel ashamed for my lack of preparation.

I think I heard one of “they” say that despite some people who think that death is a failure, there are far more who now say you are passing the big test as you “pass” on. I hope so, for the night before last I dreamed I was back in high school, heading to school on the subway. I had a big math test but had fallen asleep while studying the night before.

I was not prepared. I was trying desperately to catch up on my numbers when two pretty girls entered at the next stop and sat opposite me. My test preparation ended there, as my mind slipped from one plus one equals two, to which of the two would be mine. Then a further thought, as if from God, maybe one plus one does equal two, and they could both be mine. I failed the math test.

God knows, I don’t want to fail in life, so when I woke up this morning, all “they” have said flashed like lightning through my mind. I realized that all these profound past sayings were pushing me into a future for which I wasn’t prepared but must prepare now, get my ass in gear, as they say.

Since they say Franklin invented the lightning rod, I figured he must have known where lightning was before it flashed, a question that had long disturbed me to no end and whose answer left a blank in my mind until I realized it wasn’t. If you think that isn’t so, maybe you would clarify it for me, or should I look in Ben’s Poor Richard’s Almanac for an answer in one of his mathematical exercises that he included. I know how smart he was and he predicted that in the future we would be able to freeze the dead – cryonics – and resurrect them later on. I wonder where Ben Franklin is tonight. AI should know.

I realize that all desires are born in a lack, and when satisfied, they give birth to new lacks. It is a truth hard to swallow. But I still desire to be prepared despite such warnings. Weirdly, I think back to something I read in the past as I consider how to prepare for the future. Not exactly my future since – you guessed it, I’ll be dead – but I hope it’s yours. We know how to count, but for all the predictive power of numbers and calculations, we don’t know when we will die. So many people wear conventional masks to hide this and other disturbing questions. They act as if all is copacetic when it isn’t.

In his book about his passionate life, "Report to Greco," Nikos Kazantzakis, the Greek writer well-known for Zorba the Greek, recounts a time when he was looking at fierce African masks in a museum. They were made of wood, hide, and human skulls. He tells us:

"In an effort to unravel the mystery of masks, I said to myself, the mask is our true face, we are these monsters with their bloody mouths, hanging lips, and horrifying eyes. A repulsive mask howls behind the beautiful features of the woman we love, chaos behind the visible world, Buddha behind Christ’s gentle face. Sometimes in the terrible moments of love, hate, or death the deceptive charm vanishes and we view truth’s frightening countenance…I pretend to believe in mankind’s faces, and in this way I am able to live with my fellow human beings."

Then this great pretender, this great disbelieving believer, this modern Odysseus, this genius writes that a girl came and stood next to him. He was not prepared for what happened next, but you can imagine. It’s an old story, masks or not. It often happens that when you look ahead too much, no matter how smart you think you are, you fail to see who is standing beside you, and when you focus on planning the future, filling in all those little squares on the calendar, the present goes out of focus, and you are ensnared in the uncanny.

Kazantzakis ends his book with a dream of his beloved Cretan grandfather who came from the land of the dead to find him. Nikos is old now, dark hair has whitened. ”In the atmosphere of love,” he writes, “who can distinguish a flash from eternity…My entire lifetime I was a bow in merciless, insatiable hands. How often those invisible hands drew and overdrew the bow until I heard it creak at the breaking point! ‘Let it break,’ I cried each time.” He ends by telling his grandfather that he has come to recline as dust by his side, “that the two of us may await the Final Judgment together.”

It was that word “dust” that brought me back to the thought of my ashes and my preparations. I don’t want to fail. Mathematics was never my strength, so even if I could understand the relativity stuff, the meaning of e=mc2 and so on, I wouldn’t believe it. And I could study it all my life but I still wouldn’t care. I could have kept my head in the math book on the subway without looking up to see the girls smiling at me. Maybe I saw their masks. But I liked what I saw. As Kazantzakis’s great character Zorba the Greek tells his friend, boss, the uptight writer, to be free you need to cut the string that ties us to the calculating mathematical mindset:

"You need a touch of folly to do that; folly, d’you see? You have to risk everything. But you’ve got such a strong head, it’ll always get the better of you. A man’s head is like a grocer; it keeps accounts. I’ve paid so much and earned so much and that means a profit of this much or a loss of that much! The head’s a careful little shopkeeper; it never risks all it has, always keeps something in reserve. It never breaks the string. Ah no! It hangs on tight to it, the bastard! If the string slips out of it grasp, the head, poor devil, is lost, finished! But if a man doesn’t break the string, tell me, what flavor is left in life? The flavor of chamomile, weak chamomile tea! Nothing like rum – that makes you see life inside out!"

So nine minus five equals four, or so they say. It means nothing to me. They say we live forward and remember backwards. They say time is a river that ends at the sea. They say there is a 34% chance of rain tomorrow at 1 P.M. I’m sick of they; the hell with them! How are you with they?

Yet I’m still taking no chances. My ashes have been accumulating is a small custard cup for a year now, burnt down from the incense that is in the bathroom to make shit smell like roses. We like to make believe. So I’m getting ahead of my life and going down to town to the twisting Housatonic River to scatter my ashes in advance. I too like to make believe. Ahead of what, you might wonder: one year, five, ten, fifteen, fifty? Math can’t tell us. I just hope the stench from the waste processing plant on the other side of the river doesn’t spoil the ceremony. I prefer roses.Say what you want, call me an ashhole. Say this is all folly.

You may be right, I may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for. But you can’t say I’m not preparing..."

My guess is that it was the sudden high energy signatures of using the atomic bombs in the 1940's that caught their attention.

"A Look to the Heavens"

"How do clusters of galaxies form and evolve? To help find out, astronomers continue to study the second closest cluster of galaxies to Earth: the Fornax cluster, named for the southern constellation toward which most of its galaxies can be found. Although almost 20 times more distant than our neighboring Andromeda galaxy, Fornax is only about 10 percent further that the better known and more populated Virgo cluster of galaxies.
Fornax has a well-defined central region that contains many galaxies, but is still evolving. It has other galaxy groupings that appear distinct and have yet to merge. Seen here, almost every yellowish splotch on the image is an elliptical galaxy in the Fornax cluster. The picturesque barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 visible on the lower right is also a prominent Fornax cluster member."

"Stop Living to Please Others – Jung’s Brutal Advice"
"How many times have you said "yes" when your soul was screaming "no"? In this raw and life-changing video, we dive into the profound wisdom of Carl Jung, who boldly exposed the truth behind people-pleasing: it’s not kindness. It’s fear. And it’s costing you your authentic self. You've been wearing masks. Smiling to avoid conflict. Helping to feel worthy. But beneath that performance lives a silent scream - the part of you that’s tired of betraying your own truth."
