"We're Not Ready For What's Coming"
"In this new interview, retired Colonel Douglas Macgregor argues that the United States has reached a strategic turning point and that the era of using overwhelming American force to compel other countries is coming to an end. He says the financial system is fragile, the real economy is struggling, and that restarting the war could leave the United States facing five to 10 years of recovery, while stopping now could still mean two to three years of disruption. Macgregor predicts that Iran and Turkey could emerge as the two dominant powers in the Middle East for decades, while he also identifies India, China, and Russia as rising powers. He argues that the world has changed because advanced surveillance, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned systems now allow smaller and middle-sized states to challenge traditional military power, making the old model of entering a country with troops and tanks and forcing submission increasingly ineffective.
The interview also examines the growing strain on American missile defenses and the changing military balance. A CSIS assessment cited in the discussion found that the United States has expended roughly half of its Patriot and THAAD interceptor inventories during the conflict, while Turkey has already flown its KAAN fighter, a fifth-generation aircraft that completed its maiden flight in February 2024. Macgregor compares the current situation with the 1956 Suez Crisis, arguing that the war could become an American equivalent of the moment when Britain and France were forced to retreat from Suez. The Strait of Hormuz normally carries roughly one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption, while the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen sharply from its historical levels, adding another layer of economic and strategic pressure."
